Motivation And Employee Performance: An Analytical Study Of Employee Of Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, Nigeria

Abstract

Motivation is a critical determinant of employee performance levels, as sufficient motivational measures significantly enhance staff productivity and contribute substantially to achieving organisational objectives, while inadequate motivation impedes employee performance and adversely affects organisational goals. The question has been how is these motivational factors be able to drive performance in various organisations. This study aims to examine the impact of motivation on employee performance of Micheal Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Abia State, Nigeria. A sample of 359 was calculated from a population of 3,588 using the Yamane formula. The study variables include salary and allowance, training opportunities, promotion opportunities, job security and employee performance which serve as dependent variable. Verified questionnaire was used for data collection, and Microsoft Excel and simple econometric regression were utilised for analysis. The finding shows that all explanatory variables - salary and allowance, training opportunities, promotion opportunities, job security- have a substantial positive impact on the performance of MOUAU staff. Hence, the study proposes that the University management develop and enforce a pay system based on performance, ensuring that compensation aligns with key performance indicators. This system will enhance staff performance and inspire a culture of innovation and hard work, knowing their professional growth and monetary benefits are performance-driven.
